The government has announced that from 4 July 2020, Places of Worship in England will be permitted to open again for services, in addition to
being open for private prayer which has been permitted since 13 June 2020.
Your key legal requirement prior to re-opening is to carry out a risk assessment and then implement any control measures identified. You helped provide 1.3 million people across 34 countries with life-saving assistance such as hygiene education, hand washing facilities and food parcels. Now, I’m asking you to stand with us again. Even as the pandemic slows down here in the UK, across the world it is accelerating. People already suffering due to conflict, persecution and poverty now face the threat of a disease against which they have little protection. Millions of lives are at stake, and the need is growing every day. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) – a group of 14 of the UK’s leading aid charities – has launched an urgent appeal for help. We’re joining with other DEC members to ask for your support. >In Yemen, millions of people have been facing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with extreme hunger and violence part of everyday life. Now, there’s coronavirus too.
But there is hope. Because there is the church. Tearfund continues to step up its response, working with local churches and other partners to reach people in need. Norma writes that this event was "very interesting and inspiring".The National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast is an annual recognition of the contribution that Christianity makes to the national life of the UK. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast took place online and was livestreamed from 8.30-9.00am on Tuesday 30 June. The event was chaired by Marsha de Cordova MP and the main speaker was the Bishop of Kensington, the Rt Revd Dr Graham Tomlin, who addressed the theme of ‘Hope and peace in a time of fear and suffering.’ You can watch a recording on the Christians in parliament website or on the group's youtube channel.

Sorry for this being belated but here’s a massive thank you for coming out for Discovery Bay at Hullabaloo! We splashed out and got you all
a bunch of flowers….
Thanks to everyone’s collective expertise, creativity, enthusiasm, amazing camera/recording skills , word spreading and winning ways, I reckon everyone’s not only managed to give a global pandemic a what-for, and brought a 3-day festival online when everything around the country was being cancelled, but there is now also a lasting celebration of the Isle of Wight Biosphere, natural science, arts and ways to discover the Island and beyond over on the Hullabaloo website. And hopefully our Secret Skylark, Rosie Johnson will be taking home her bronze award for the D of E too! Everyone is still collating the facts and figures and the Hullabaloo team will send out a proper press release, but Nige and Ches report that there were a huge volume of watchers of the videos on Facebook and really surprising was the global reach for the website! 1500 hits just over those few days which is great considering the main focus over that time was the live feed on Facebook. Racial Justice Webinars
The Covid-19 crisis has written large the pre-existing and ongoing inequalities that exist within this country, especially along the lines of race and ethnicity. The ‘Hostile Environment', the ‘Windrush Scandal’, the Grenfell Tower Fire, anti-immigration sentiments of ‘Brexit’ and more recently the anti-racist protests, are evidence that institutional racism remains deeply hidden within Britain’s society, resulting in the loss of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) lives. It can be argued that the Church has yet to have a comprehensive conversation around racial justice matters, despite the magnitude of their impact. This lack of engagement has resulted in confusion, frustration and anger and has, in part, contributed to the Black Lives Matter protests. In light of the murder of George Floyd and the wave of anti-racist protests, Baptists Together and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI) have organised a number of events over the coming year, including a series of webinars to address racial justice matters. The aim of these webinars is to resource churches, associations and colleges to theologically engage with racism and advocate against racism in both the Church and society. Children, Youth & Mission Training Celebrates 20 Years with Leicester MoveThe Institute for Children, Youth and Mission (CYM) is celebrating 20 years of providing specialist training through BA and MA qualifications in ministry with young people, children and families. An imminent move to new premises next to Leicester’s Cathedral Gardens allows CYM to enable Christians from all backgrounds to develop their expertise, theological understanding and spiritual resources for careers in mission and ministry with children, families, young people, communities and chaplaincy. CYM’s BA and MA courses are eligible for funding under the student loan system. | Although Aiden came from Ireland to the island of Iona to set up a Christian community there, he ended up bringing the faith to Northumbria too, creating a mixed community of round stone homes at Lindisfarne. A Message from the Moderator, The Reverend Roland Wort
| Hello there again! I’ve always been interested in the origin of popular sayings and phrases – who first used the words. We may have heard the expression “All that glitters is not gold” and to my surprise I discovered that it was first used by William Shakespeare, over 400 years ago. Other Shakespearean specialities include: “Tough Love”, My Own Flesh and Blood”, “The Be-All And End-All”, “The World Is My Oyster”, Wild-Goose Chase”, and “Wear Your Heart On A Sleeve”. A motto that was used quite a lot in the Second World War and has been revived on Tea Towels, Mugs and T-Shirts is the slogan “Keep Calm and Carry On”. This is a typical British expression, emphasising our national sense of quiet modesty and natural reserve, just getting on with it, despite the obstacles and hindrances. During the current coronavirus situation, all sorts of expressions have arisen that perhaps we didn’t use much before March 2020: “Self-isolating”, “Pandemic”, “Quarantine”, “Lockdown”, “Key Workers”, “WFH”. Other recently-invented expressions include “Covidiot”, “Covideo Party”, Blursday” and “Zoombombing”. I’ve even heard that Cockney rhyming slang for Coronavirus is “Miley Cyrus”! And on the subject of sayings and expressions, some words we use in everyday language were in fact first used by Jesus: “Turn The Other Cheek”, “Go The Extra Mile”, and “Practice What You Preach” and “Pass By On The Other Side”. He gave us also some paradoxical quotes, “The Last Will Be First And The First Will be Last” and “Whoever Finds Their Life Will Lose It And Whoever Loses Their Life For My Sake Will Find It” and some quite demanding principles, “Let Your Yes Be Yes And Your No Be No” and “No-One Can Serve Two Masters”. At the moment, the major current issue in the world (apart from COVID19) is how do we interact and reciprocate with others who are different from us? Jesus gives us His challenging golden rule: “Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You”. Community Support Helplines Update 11 June 2020  The phone numbers and contact details for support for Island residents available from People Matter IW via our links page have been updated with effect from 11 June. Scam Alert re KN95 Face Masks The health and Safety Executive has issued a warning about face masks which may be on general sale not bearing the "CE" mark. It says that A substantial number of face masks, claiming to be of KN95 standards, provide an inadequate level of protection and are likely to be poor quality products accompanied by fake or fraudulent paperwork. These face masks may also be known as filtering facepiece respirators. KN95 is a performance rating under a Chinese standard broadly the same as the European eqiuvalent. However, there is no independent certification or assurance of their quality. Personal protective equipment (PPE) cannot be sold or supplied as PPE unless it is CE marked. The only exception is for PPE that is organised by the UK Government for use by NHS or other healthcare workers. Scam Alert re Alleged Lockdown Violations. Trading Standards are warning about an email purporting to be from the Health and Safety Executive. The message states that the HSE have recieved a complaint about possible lockdown violations and contains an attached spreadsheet detailing the violations. This guidance spells out what we expect this relaxation of restrictions will look like so that churches may begin to discuss plans for re-opening. It will be updated as soon as the Government provides further clarity. We appreciate that the use of church buildings for private prayer may be a comfort to other church traditions more than it is to Baptists. We are actively involved in ecumenical discussions with the Government so that the recommencement of our tradition of ‘gathered church’ is considered as early as possible. Nevertheless, our first interest is in supporting attempts to minimise transmission of Covid-19. We believe that this best expresses our care for the vulnerable. At this point it is clear that the opening of church buildings for private prayer should not be used as an excuse for covert worship services or even prayer meetings. Updated advice and upcoming law on face coverings
| From the gov.uk website yesterday... Face Coverings If you can, wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces where social distancing isn’t possible and where you will come into contact with people you do not normally meet. This is most relevant for short periods indoors in crowded areas, for example, on public transport or in some shops. From 15 June, you must wear a face covering on public transport. You should be prepared to remove your face covering if asked to do so by police officers and staff for the purposes of identification. Evidence suggests that wearing a face covering does not protect you. However, if you are infected but have not yet developed symptoms, it may provide some protection for others you come into close contact with. Face coverings do not replace social distancing. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 (cough, and/or high temperature, and/or loss of, or change in, your normal sense of smell or taste - anosmia), you and your household must isolate at home: wearing a face covering does not change this. You should arrange to have a test to see if you have COVID-19. A face covering is not the same as the surgical masks or respirators used by healthcare and other workers as part of personal protective equipment. These should continue to be reserved for those who need them to protect against risks in their workplace, such as health and care workers, and those in industrial settings, like those exposed to dust hazards. Face coverings should not be used by children under the age of 2 or those who may find it difficult to manage them correctly. For example, primary age children unassisted, or those with respiratory conditions. It is important to use face coverings properly and wash your hands before putting them on and taking them off.  There should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it... 1 Corinthians 12:25-26 HOPE Together helps churches make Jesus know, with words as well as actions, together. That has meant being intentional about building bridges with churches of all denominations and ethnicities, for the sake of mission. Jesus prayed: ‘…that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me’ (John 18:23). Our unity speaks volumes and shows the world what God is like. We have had lots to learn on this journey of unity for the purpose of mission. This week our brothers and sisters in the BAME churches have been suffering following the death of George Floyd in the USA. We share their pain. Our good friend Pastor Agu Irukwu from the Redeemed Christian Church of God has recorded his own wise, powerful and challenging response, which you can watch here. Let’s be people who demonstrate Jesus’ love to the world, by the way we love one another. Roy Crowne HOPE Together's Executive Director  Talking Hope is our Facebook Live event on Monday evenings from 8pm, hosted by associate director Yemi Adedeji, with Roy Crowne and members of the HOPE team. Last week’s guests on Talking HOPE were Lindz West from LZ7, who is seeing hundreds of young people responding to Jesus through his ‘Cabin Fever’ shows from his converted loft; Stephen Elphick from HOPE Bedford who talked about the HOPE Space that has been established in Bedford town centre, and Pastor Tunde Balogun from Kingsborough Church in Uxbridge, who explained how a foodbank parcel given to a local woman saved her life. The Uxbridge foodbank network, which involves 30 churches, and has been given responsibility for food distribution throughout the borough during the Covid-19 crisis. Clevedon’s market stall HOPE Space  On the first morning after lockdown that market stalls were allowed to open in Clevedon in Somerset, Clevedon Baptist Church were out giving away copies of Mark’s Gospel and connecting with market traders and their customers. They also had copies of the HOPE Spaces prayer card to give away to encourage people to bring their concerns to God. Senior Minister Rev Antony Wareham says, ‘We have booked a weekly market stall in Clevedon Market and our chaplaincy team will be there to talk, listen and support people. We have also organised how we can make the foyer of our church a HOPE Space, with social distancing taken into account, as soon as we are able to open up! We are praying that many people in our community will meet with Jesus as we engage in mission.’ Churches Together in Clevedon formed the Clevedon Chaplaincy Team in 2018 to serve the retail and business communities in the town centre to be alongside people in their everyday lives and to be a pastoral Christian presence in the workplace. As a result of the relationships built with C levedon Market, they were offered the market stall free of charge. HOPE Spaces online  We are developing an online HOPE Space as well as adapting our HOPE Spaces resources to conform to social distancing guidelines. You can download resources from the HOPE website at hopetogether.org.uk/hopespaces Prayer in Parliament Spread the word about this year’s National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast. The annual event will be livestreamed on Tuesday 30 June 8.30-9.00am. The theme is ‘Hope and peace in a time of fear and suffering’ and the event will include prayers led by parliamentarians, hymns led by special guest singers and a keynote address by the Bishop of Kensington, the Rt Revd Dr Graham Tomlin. The first Amplify year is coming to an end. The amazing young people, who are developing as evangelists, have been proactively sharing their faith in so many different ways. They have called the event Solidarity Sunday, a name carefully chosen to reflect other solidarity events organised by the global Baptist family, including one in Canada earlier this month – and we really think there is no better word to describe this opportunity to take a stand together, in giving and in prayer, against the Coronavirus crisis and its devastating effects. In line with the Government’s 3 steps, it is hoped that by 4th July public places, with places of worship explicitly referenced, will be allowed to re-open in some form. This does not mean things will return to pre-COVID-19 arrangements and in order for premises to be used in any form they will need to meet the COVID-19 Secure guidelines. It might be difficult for places where social distancing is not possible to re-open fully, this will depend on the size of the space and the level of crowding and may result in only partial re-opening. Churches should be aware that even if all the criteria are met for re-opening of church buildings from July, this is conditional and part of a phased plan to lift lockdown. The FAQs note “As with all coronavirus restrictions on places of worship, venues and social distancing, we will look to ease them as soon as it is safe to do so.” Activities on church premises: Under the current regulations churches can be used for some essential activities ‘to provide essential voluntary services or urgent public support services (including the provision of food banks or other support for the homeless or vulnerable people, blood donation sessions or support in an emergency).’ This must be within the context that social distancing measures are maintained. Weddings: The Government stated that there is no change to guidance on weddings at this time. However, the Government is working to enable small wedding ceremonies from 1 June. Following on from our time of prayer we will be welcoming our new President Yinka Oyekan, praying for him and finding out about his hopes for his year as President. This induction was to have taken place during our Assembly, but we hope that even more will be able to join in online this year. He will be joined by current President Ken Benjamin. Many will have seen communication about this event either through our channels or your local Association. In light of the news that Boris Johnson will address the nation at 7pm Sunday and announce the first steps out of lockdown we have decided to change the time of the broadcast to 8pm. This will allow us to pray in light of what is said.

A Message from our Moderator, The Reverend Roland Wort
| Hello there again! I hope you are coping as best as you can with the “lockdown”. We certainly need to pray for our political leaders as they wrestle with the various options for easing the country “back to normality”. I wonder how you have been using the time during the lockdown? Since I left the Royal Navy in 2016, I have been wanting to have a good clear out of all the various things I have accumulated over the years. It’s easy to put things off and find excuses for not getting down to the elephant sized task and to be honest, not a lot of decluttering has gone on for the last 4 years! Somehow, there has always been something more interesting to do, like getting a part-time job, watching Hampshire play cricket, solve the super fiendish Sudoku puzzle in The Times, go to Model Railway Exhibitions……and of course there’s always a sermon to write for next Sunday! Well, for the time being, all of the above has come to a halt - except solving the Sudoku – and the time has come to sort through the North Face of the Eiger pile of paper, the bank statements going back to 1990, the MOD Health and Safety regulations, the leaflets for washing machines that we no longer have, the rather dated sermons from the 1990s and the receipts for shirts that are now worn out and used for rag in the garage. And talking about the garage, what about the yoghurt pots that might come in useful one day, the numerous screwdrivers and hammers, the half used pots of discoloured paint, the tubs of filler that have hardened off, the large jar of assorted screws and the electrical flex that with red, black and green wires? Now I know that some people have written books and made a fortune out of de-cluttering. For me, it’s rather more simple - do I still need it and if so, where do I store it neatly and tidily; if not, then pass it on, or preferably throw it away. And it’s quite staggering how much stuff gets thrown away. There’s still a lot to do, but I’m already enjoying the benefits of a clear bench in the garage and a filing cabinet that actually has some space in it! And moving away from the physical to the spiritual, I wonder if a bit of personal decluttering might help – what is really important for us, what really matters? When Jesus was asked about the important things in life, he highlighted loving God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and loving our neighbour as ourself. There will also be for us commitments in the home, work, school, and community, with family and friends, with hobbies and pastimes, in the church and doing charitable work. With all of our many responsibilities, it is possible for us to become weighed down and lose the overall enjoyment of life. This rather unusual time of restricted activity might be for you an opportunity to declutter, make some adjustments, reduce unnecessary obligations and identify the things that really matter. Albert & Social Distancing – Resource for Children | 
For the past few weeks, Richard Littledale, Minister at Newbury Baptist Church, has been working away in the background with wonderful
illustrator, Heather Heyworth, to produce a story for children all about social distancing. It can be so hard to explain - and so his
friend, 'Albert the Mouse', has stepped in to help.
The story can be read or downloaded for free here, and it is formatted for A4 if people want to print it out and use it that way.
Baptist Together Wednesday Webinars | The BU Ministries Team are hosting a programme of ‘Wednesday Webinars’ each week at 1pm. Almost without exception they are aimed at addressing some feature of our current constrained circumstances. They are aimed especially at ministers and church leaders but are available to anyone. They will be sending out an email to all ministers later this week to let them know. So far, they have had between 25 and 50 people join each live broadcast and 100 or more watch the recordings later. The webinars, including previous editions, can be found here:

But we didn’t close down. We went online. Churches are on a steep learning curve, and some are on a steep growing curve.
To assist learning and growing, we’ve asked many churches for stories and wisdom in the early weeks of lockdown church.
Read our core document ‘Everybody Welcome Online’, which extends our training course for in-person church, ‘Everybody Welcome’. Tell your friends about it. It tries to make sense of what is happening (pp4-9), looks at who is being attracted to online church and why (pp1-12), how best to communicate with and welcome everyone online (pp14-20), and what we should be doing to prepare for 'Unlock Sunday' (pp22-23). We will keep updating and adding resources and stories over time from your feedback ot us (p.25). We’ve teamed up with Peter Phillips, Director of the Durham University Centre for Digital Theology. | 29 April 2020 TEAR FUND CORONAVIRUS EMERGENCY APPEAL Click here to see the original of this message. Dear Friends, Coronavirus is spreading among some of the world’s poorest communities. Time is running out to help them – please mobilise your church and join us in prayer. Many of us will have spent this season with a real sense of fear and uncertainty. Our churches have had to quickly adapt to deeply challenging circumstances. Who could have predicted that we would have to celebrate the triumph of Jesus without being able to meet face to face? We’ve seen for ourselves the enormous disruption this virus can cause. Yet for people living in extreme poverty the impact could be unthinkable. In Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, the largest refugee camp in the world, cramped conditions mean it’s impossible to keep a safe distance from people. And there aren’t enough handwashing facilities. The virus could spread through the camp like wildfire – threatening the half a million Rohingya people who live there. People whose lives were already a struggle. Our local church partners are on the frontline, and they need your prayers more than ever. ‘We are distributing leaflets about handwashing, distancing and recognising the symptoms,’ says Sudarshan Kodooru, Tearfund’s Country Director in Bangladesh. ‘We have given out hygiene kits, but getting access to the [refugee] camps is likely to become even harder. The handpumps and sanitation facilities we’ve been able to provide will be more important than ever.’ The scale of the work required is huge, but we know that the prayerful support of your church and others around the UK will be powerful and effective (James 5:16). We’ve put together some helpful resources that you can share with your church – including a pre-recorded talk and a prayer guide. Our teams on the ground will take a huge amount of strength from knowing that the saints are joined together in prayer for them. We know many of you will want to give financially in response. If you are able to, either as a church or individually, please give online here. With our offices closed, this is currently the most cost-effective way to process your gifts. We know these are hard times for us all – our thoughts and prayers are with you and your church. We are incredibly grateful for your support in the midst of these difficult circumstances. A Message from our Moderator, | The Reverend Roland Wort Hello there! Thank you for inviting me to be your moderator. Firstly, let me introduce myself. I was born in Salisbury and baptised as a teenager in the local Baptist Church. After going to Cardiff University to study Mathematics (with a bit of Physics thrown in), I went to Spurgeon’s College to train for the Baptist Ministry. I was a pastor for 8 years at Perry Rise Baptist Church, Forest Hill, South-east London, but for most of my ministry I have been a chaplain in the Royal Navy. I did 26 years as a full-time chaplain, retiring in 2016 and for the last 4 years I have been a part-time reservist chaplain. In addition to working in a variety of establishments in Portsmouth and Plymouth, I served on destroyers and frigates deployed all over the world and spent some time also with the Royal Australian Navy and the US Navy. For 3 years (2013-16), I served as an Honorary Chaplain to Her Majesty The Queen, a great honour indeed. My wife, Sharon, and I live in Winchester and we met at Cardiff University. We’ve been married for 40 years and have 2 married daughters, Rebecca and Jo, and 4 grandchildren. In “normal” circumstances, I would now be visiting Sandown on a monthly basis and exploring the way ahead for the Sandown Baptist Church, looking at different types of ministry and helping you decide what would be appropriate for the church at this particular time. However, we all find ourselves in this rather strange situation where (quite rightly) we have to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel and go out shopping for basic necessities only. Therefore, I won’t be able to visit the church until the restrictions are lifted. In the meantime, I would encourage you all to keep in touch with each other by phone, text or email and, if possible, to read regularly the BUGB and SCBA websites where there is some really useful material to help us at this unusual time, including live-streamed Church Services. Finally, at this time of Easter, we need to remind ourselves of the great truths of the Christian faith, that Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, was crucified, was buried yet rose again from the dead. In a time of national perplexity and bewilderment, many are feeling vulnerable and perhaps even fearful. I’ve been really impressed by the ways that churches and individual Christians have been helping in their communities and demonstrating practical love in action. In the midst of all the confusion and bafflement , there is an opportunity for us to affirm our faith and proclaim some good news. In previous times of National Crisis, eg the Two World Wars, the churches never minimised the suffering and pain experienced by the nation, but found ways of offering hope and optimism, not in a loud, brash, insensitive way but with quiet self-confidence, similar to the words of the old hymn, “Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow”. from 1 April until the lockdown is lifted. The Bay Foodbank at The Chapel (YMCA) Winchester House, Sandown Road,
Shanklin will open only on Thursday - 4.30 to 6.30pm and Friday 9.30 to 11.30am. This Foodbank will be open on
Good Friday but will close on Tuesdays until the lockdown is lifted. The Ryde Foodbank - Grace Church, Marlborough
Road, Ryde - remains open on Tuesday and Thursday.

Some Good News ! | We are glad to announce the birth of Eliot Lovell, a bouncing 8 pound 6 ounce boy to Samuel and Abbi Lovell. Apparently he looks like Samuel and nicely fills a cardigan knitted for his father when he was born.

IW businesses and groups have listed their abilities to deliver to areas across the Island, starting to-day. A NEW WARNING ABOUT THE NUMBER OF COVID 19 SCAMS | Unscrupulous criminals are exploiting fears about COVID-19 to prey on members of the public, particularly older and vulnerable people who are isolated from family and friends. National Trading Standards is warning people to remain vigilant following a rise in coronavirus-related scams that seek to benefit from the public’s concern and uncertainty over COVID-19. Members of the public should ignore scam products such as supplements and anti-virus kits that falsely claim to cure or prevent COVID-19. In some cases individuals may be pressurised on their own doorsteps to buy anti-virus kits or persuaded into purchasing products that are advertised on their social media feeds. In addition, some call centres that previously targeted UK consumers with dubious health products are now offering supplements that supposedly prevent COVID-19. Communities are also being urged to look out for signs of neighbours being targeted by doorstep criminals. While there are genuine groups of volunteers providing help during self-isolation, there have been reports of criminals preying on residents – often older people or people living with long-term health conditions – by cold-calling at their homes and offering to go to the shops for them. The criminals often claim to represent charities to help them appear legitimate before taking the victim’s money. There are genuine charities providing support, so consumers should be vigilant and ask for ID from anyone claiming to represent a charity. COVID-19 scams identified include: Doorstep crime • Criminals targeting older people on their doorstep and offering to do their shopping. Thieves take the money and do not return. • Doorstep cleansing services that offer to clean drives and doorways to kill bacteria and help prevent the spread of the virus. Online scams • Email scams that trick people into opening malicious attachments, which put people at risk of identity theft with personal information, passwords, contacts and bank details at risk. Some of these emails have lured people to click on attachments by offering information about people in the local area who are affected by coronavirus. • Fake online resources – such as false Coronavirus Maps – that deliver malware such as AZORult Trojan, an information stealing program which can infiltrate a variety of sensitive data. A prominent example that has deployed malware is ‘corona-virus-map[dot]com’. Refund scams • Companies offering fake holiday refunds for individuals who have been forced to cancel their trips. People seeking refunds should also be wary of fake websites set up to claim holiday refunds. Counterfeit goods • Fake sanitisers, face masks and Covid19 swabbing kits sold online and door-to-door. These products can often be dangerous and unsafe. There are reports of some potentially harmful hand sanitiser containing glutaral (or glutaraldehyde), which was banned for human use in 2014. Telephone scams • As more people self-isolate at home there is an increasing risk that telephone scams will also rise, including criminals claiming to be your bank, mortgage lender or utility company. Donation scams • There have been reports of thieves extorting money from consumers by claiming they are collecting donations for a COVID-19 ‘vaccine’. Loan sharks • Illegal money lenders are expected to prey on people’s financial hardship, lending money before charging extortionate interest rates and fees through threats and violence People are being encouraged to protect their neighbours by joining Friends Against Scams, which provides free online training to empower people to take a stand against scams. NTS is also issuing urgent advice to help prevent people falling victim to COVID-19 scams through its Friends Against Scams initiative. Members of the public are being urged to keep in contact with family members regularly and inform them of the most prolific scams and the possible dangers to them. If someone has been targeted by a scam it can be reported to Action Fraud online at www.actionfraud.police.uk/ or by calling 0300 123 2040. Tuesday 24 March Midday | A few items borrowed from another website!
IW COUNCIL | The Government guidance on school closures is clear that children should stay at home if they can safely do that. However, children should not be cared for by elderly people or people with an underlying health condition. Schools will be providing places for the children of parents whose work is critical to the coronavirus (Covid-19) response and include those who work in health and social care and in other key sectors so they can continue to work, where they cannot make other arrangements for their care. Where required, schools will also make sure vulnerable children have access to a school place and that children who are entitled to a free school meal continue to receive it. Councillor Paul Brading, Cabinet member for children’s services and education, said: "Island schools have been brilliant, putting plans in place for this week at such short notice. "Parents need to be responsible and only take up a school place if they are in the categories that the government has defined and really cannot make other arrangements. “We are hugely grateful to all our schools and education colleagues for their efforts to make sure our most valued key workers can continue to do their vital work during this challenging time. "We urge everyone to follow the latest government advice and check the council website for the latest local advice." Information for parents on schools — closures, key workers, vulnerable children, school meals etc — is here and is being regularly updated Please check the IWC website for updates It hasn’t taken long for the scammers to try to cash in on the fear and concern surrounding the Coronavirus. Cyber criminals are targeting individuals as well as industries – In common with most other crisis situations, criminals are using emails, text messages, social media posts, online advertisements and phone calls to defraud their unsuspecting victims. Beware of- - Click here for a cure – emails are being sent purporting to be from a doctor claiming to have details about a vaccine being covered up by the UK and Chinese Governments. You will be taken to a fake web page where your details will be harvested. NEVER click on links in emails. - Covid-19 Tax Refund Email – this has links to access a refund and you will be asked to put in all of your financial information. The HMRC will never advise you of a tax refund in this way. NEVER click on links in emails - Fake Online Advertisements – these include, protective masks, sanitising gel, vaccines (these do not currently exist) and appeals from fake charities - Criminals are also knocking on doors selling Coronavirus tests. These are fake and wont tell you anything. We haven’t had any reports yet on the Island but please be aware anyone acting legitimately would not be going door to door trying to get you to part with money. DON’T get tempted into ordering any of these items – it is unlikely that you will receive your product and your money will be gone. DON’T believe everything you read – for accurate and up to date information use reliable and official sources such as the Government Official website and the NHS https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-the-public https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/
ISLE OF WIGHT FUELS | We have put measures in place to reduce the impact of the coronavirus, this includes keeping our delivery drivers and customers safe, Therefore, our drivers will be keeping contact with customers to a minimum, our drivers will not ask for delivery paperwork to be signed and will leave in a convenient place, for the foreseeable future. Our terminal will remain open but with a reduced team, our stock position is currently holding well, and product is still being received as normal. IW COUNCIL | is extending its support for elderly people during the COVID-19 crisis. From Monday 23 March bus passes for Island bus users who are over 65 will be valid before 9.30am, to help older travellers access supermarkets which have made available early shopping time slots for elderly people. Councillor Ian Ward, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure & Transport said: “The Isle of Wight Council is extremely pleased to have reached agreement with our transport and health partners to extend our support for those residents with bus passes. This will allow them to access the offer from retailers to use their shops early in the morning.”
POST OFFICE | We know how important Post Office branches are to our customers. And we, alongside our postmasters and branch colleagues are doing all that we can to keep our branches open, so that we can continue to provide our products and services to you and your communities. At the moment, the majority of our branches are open as usual and our supply chain is running as normal. Our priority is to keep our customers, postmasters and colleagues safe and healthy. We have advised everyone working in our branches to practice good hand hygiene and we ask that our customers do the same, as well as maintaining a sensible distance between other customers and our colleagues. We will keep you updated as the situation evolves. But please rest assured that we are doing everything we can to support our customers, communities, postmasters and colleagues through this challenging time.
ISLE OF WIGHT FOODBANK | It has already been reported that nationally, contributions to Foodbanks are down - what can we do within our communities to help? From Hannah Jones -We have been working hard to balance the amount of volunteers who have quite rightly had to step back but WE ARE STILL OPEN However, how we operate is looking different from previously. Our Foodbanks around the Island are still open and supporting locals in crisis (apart from our Freshwater Cafe). From now, food vouchers will be fulfilled with a pre-packaged food parcel. Depending on how busy we are, there may be a wait for food as we keep up with demand. We have seen an increase in the number of people we are supporting and a definite decrease in food donations too. So we take each day as it comes and do our best at what we can. We will be communication a lot more in the days ahead as we keep up with the changes.
SOUTHERN VECTIS | All of our latest info is available via this link; https://www.islandbuses.info/coronavirus" The main message is that we’re currently still running buses as normal, but we plan to introduce emergency timetables from 6th April, or perhaps the week before. Also, keep an eye on www.thepriceiswight.co.uk for offers. Brownriggs have said they will be doing deliveries on Mondays and Thursdays. You can order on their website brownriggfarmmeats.co.uk. They do meat, eggs, fresh vegetables and Grace's bread. They have significantly increased their bread order so should have plenty. £15 or more gets a free delivery, under that it is £3. They do lots of pickled and preserved stuff as well that they will add if you ask for it. The Co-op at Rookley will be closing at 8pm rather than 11pm. This is to help the staff keep the service going.

Saturday 21 March 12:40 | A new helpline number is now available to support the Island’s most vulnerable residents affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19) self-isolation measures. People who do not have a local network of friends or family to support them while they are self-isolating or social distancing can call (01983) 823600 (seven days a week, 9am-5pm) for support. The helpline has been put in place by the Isle of Wight Council in partnership with the Island’s voluntary networks, including Community Action Isle of Wight, Citizens Advice Isle of Wight and Age UK Isle of Wight, to support those who meet the coronavirus ‘vulnerable’ criteria. Please will you spread the word as widely as possible - perhaps dropping a copy of this information through letterboxes to those in need of the telephone numbers. Saturday 21 March 12:32 | Isle of Wight Libraries will re-open as community support hubs as soon as arrangements can be put in place, working with community partners, to create local hubs enabling residents to safely access the internet or to gather information about council services. When the buildings are community hubs, customers will be asked to keep at home any books they currently have on loan, unless asked for them to be returned, in order to prevent the need for staff to handle them. All due back dates have been extended, and no fines will be accrued during the closure period. Ebooks, eaudiobooks, emagazines and newspapers can be accessed online using your library card.
